peau d'ane
jacques demy (1970)what i love about this movie is its use of color (i'm a sucker for primary colors, and they're especially saturated in this one) and the set design, with real people acting as statues (something that i suspect Demy took from Cocteau's La belle et la bête, in which human arms coming out of the walls in a hallway act as candle holders)
kamikaze girls
nakashima tetsuya (2004)EVERYTHING about this film drives me crazy. it's unreal. i'm not sure what genre it falls into, but what i'm sure of is that this is one of those movies that remind me why i love cinema. it's such a delightful mix of techniques and styles- just watch it if you haven't yet, i guarantee you won't regret it!!
天国と地獄 (high and low)
kurosawa akira (1963)one of my favorite directors ever!! kurosawa is mostly known for his extremely influential samurai movies (his impact on western cinema is seriously unmatched: he inspired martin scorsese, george lucas, and sergio leone, amongst many others, and almost all of his movies have been remade or adapted for western audiences) but i have to admit that my favorite film of his is one of the few non-samurai ones: high and low. this is a crime film about a businessman who has to deal with the kidnapping of his son. i won't spoil it for you, just go watch it! and if you end up liking it, i suggest you also watch seven samurai (1954), yojimbo (1961), and ikiru (1952). every single frame has perfect composition, all the values are just right, and his blocking is just *chef's kiss*
hellboy
guillermo del toro (2004)idk what to say about this movie. great plot 👍
(the plot:
)
but in all seriousness, i really love the colors in this. the blues and the reds are so vivid, i wish i could eat this movie (which is a normal thing to say and to want). it's also just a delightful comic-book film, gdt strayed somewhat from the original material but it works, in my opinion!! i really enjoy rewatching this (and its 2008 sequel) from time to time!
alien
ridley scott (1979)what are you even supposed to say about a movie like this. it's terrifying, and it's iconic, and it's beautifully made. they managed to achieve a perfect balance between practical effects/sets and CGI; the dimly lit sets are designed in a busy retro-futuristic style and because of this - to me - they feel more futuristic than anything made today. they make you feel tense and isolated, the Nostromo becoming almost a character of its own. i'm also in love with all the UIs!! they just look so cool... (very eloquent, domi, good job)
ahh anyway. #releasethebushcut
taste of cherry
abbas kiarostami (1997)the first kiarostami film i watched, and also the one that i resonated with the most. it's a sad story, about a man looking for someone who will help him end his life, but instead of being a bummer it manages to rekindle your will to live, to find love and beauty in the little things. the pace is admittedly slow, as is the case for all of kiarostami's movies, but it serves a purpose.
reservoir dogs
writtin directino (1992)man, fuck quentin tarantino. this movie's really good tho. love to see men covered in blood holding each other
the lost boys
joel schumacher (1987)not an exceptionally good movie per se, but it is iconic. #DEATHBYSTEREO
the thing
john carpenter (1982)very similar in tone, plot and aesthetic to alien (1979), to the point where i could say almost the same things about it, but i won't ! just know that this film holds a special place in my heart u_u also, i place the thing in the kurt-russell-movies-that-probably-influenced-the-plot-of-metal-gear-solid cinematic universe. jsyk.
swing girls
shinobu yaguchi (2004)a group of school girls poison the school band. shenanigans ensue (it's a really fun movie go watch it!!!!)
pacific rim
guillermo del toro (2013)pacific rim doesn't have a single good poster huh.
poster design aside, this movie is really good. gdt, while sometimes too on the nose, rarely disappoints. the color schemes are very pretty (even if at times they come too close to orange-teal for my liking), and i love the design of the kaijus- but not as much as the whole concept of DRIFT COMPATIBILITY!!!!! yea yea your ship's cute and everything, but could they pilot a jaeger together?????
the princess bride
rob reiner (1987)really funny + i know most of the lines by heart + it has mandy patinkin. what more could you possibly want from a movie?
